Peer Haller will give a seminar on sustainable construction at the Onesta Wood Chair
The students will develop a modular construction system using wood to try to solve the problem of “empty Spain”. The system should focus on the ideas of circular economy and local resources.
Peer Haller is Professor of Wood Engineering and Structural Design at the University of Dresden (Germany).
Peer Haller Seminar
Organised by:
- ONESTA Wood Chair (UNAV).
- Department of Construction, Installations and Structures, School of Architecture, UNAV.
- Government of Navarre.
When: From 29 May to 3 June.
Where: Madrid – Graduate School of the University of Navarra.
Professor: Peer Haller,Professor of Wood Engineering and Structural Design at the University of Dresden (Germany).
This initiative was launched under the Onesta Wood Chair of the University of Navarra, to try to solve the current problem of “empty Spain”. In order to reverse this situation, the Government of Navarra has thought of developing a modular construction system that can be used for two different purposes: housing or small-scale industry.
As a result of this joint initiative, a seminar was organised with Peer Haller, who has asked the students to develop a modular construction system from wood to cover this need. The system should focus on the ideas of circular economy and local resources.
They should consider aspects such as transport, assembly, disassembly and transport to a new location for reassembly. The seminar will have the following timetable, detailing the workshops for each day:
Day 1 | Monday, 29 May – Lecture: Wood as a material
An analysis of the opportunities and limitations of the project will be carried out, looking for design strategies, creative processes, recurring concerns and themes, ways of approaching the project, etc. This analysis will generate a clear concept that can be developed architecturally.
Day 2 | Tuesday, 30 May – Lecture: Wood products
After the wood construction class, the groups of students should conduct extensive research on wood products to bring their future proposal to fruition.
Result: They will have to make a selection of wood products and configure their proposal spatially by means of a series of sketches.
Day 3 | Wednesday, 31 May – Lecture: Construction with wood 1
The groups of students should discuss the plans and sections of their proposal verbally and, above all, graphically.
Day 4 | Thursday, 1 June – Lecture: Construction with wood 2
The groups should develop the execution between the wood material and the glass, and other relevant details. At the same time, the group will produce a drawing to outline the different possibilities for the final image of the project.
On this day, the students will present:
- Sectioned construction or axonometric detail with a scale of 1:10.
- Final plans and sections.
- Project image.
- Definitive project model.
Day 5 | Friday, 2 June
The students will attend the Construction with Wood Forum at the Baluarte Conference Centre.
Day 6 | Saturday, 3 June
- Lecture: Future.
- Final presentation of the projects to the professors and guests.
